The Best Thing I could suggest is to monitor your tire pressure,Get yourself a good free flowing muffler, and a free flowing air filter or intake system. If your honda can bring more air in and get it out you will make more power thus getting better fuel mileage.keep your ignition components working properly as well(ie;Plugs,Wires ect..)

Re: Any good mods to improve mpg on my 2001 accord?

Would a K&N filter be worth it? I have an 03 Accord, 2.4 liter auto, and would like to do something to get better mileage. Currently I'm at around 25-28 if I'm lucky. I've tried to get my foot out of it.

People tell me that K&N filters are the cheapest mod that you can get, comparatively speaking at around $60. I've also been told that just putting a cold-air intake on would help a lot.

Being as how I don't have a whole lot of money I've been wanting to get opinions on the K&N air filter, since I can't afford to change out the exhaust system or do other high priced mods.

Any opinions would be great.

Thanks for your time.

Re: Any good mods to improve mpg on my 2001 accord?

Here is my take on this - I'm no expert in this but talking from my own experience and some educated guesses smile

K&N filter will help your car to breath easier, i.e. get air into engine a bit faster vs. regular filters.
This will help your MPG but mainly if you do more highway driving over city driving (i.e. driving on higher RPMs).

So what kind of driving you do more - city or highway?

I've put WAI (wide air intake) into my Altima within a month I purchased it, so I really cannot tell how much it helped my MPG, but I was doing about 90% highway driving so I think it helped at least some. You may look into such option too, whole WAI setup cost me like $30 or so as far as I remember. For city driving I heard/read that CAI (cold air intake) is actually better than WAI.

I also did a straight-through muffler (magnaflow, cost me about $90) that reduces back pressure on the engine and again helps with MPG on highway, but does reduce a bit your MPG in city driving.

And a regular tips like keeping tire pressure at the highest suggested value(value suggested for 5 people even if mostly you drive alone), removing extra junk from your trunk and back seat and keeping up maintenance on your car will help with MPG.

Re: Any good mods to improve mpg on my 2001 accord?

I generally end up doing about half and half. My commute to work is about 20 miles and around 8 of them are highway. I try to keep up on everything, tire pressure, keeping the air filter as clean as possible, reducing the speed with which I accelerate, meaning slow and steady versus first off the line.

What exactly is WAI? I've never heard of it before now.

I'm primarily looking for inexpensive ways to keep fuel costs down. Maybe with the stimulus that's coming I might be able to do something.

Thank you for your time. Hopefully this can help you help me. I also go to another bored to get ideas, which will hopefully help me save get ideas on how to get everything out of every drop, what with gas prices going through the roof.

Again thanks for your time.

Re: Any good mods to improve mpg on my 2001 accord?

I think the only difference between WAI and CAI is a length of the 3" pipe, in my case I just removed upper air filter cover and attached cone air filter right to the bottom part of filter box, something like this - I think it should be one for I-4 too

This one looks very much as one I have

I'll take a picture and post it here within a day or 2.

Have you heard about this mod/company?  Here's a link:  www.highlinehybrids.com  I've installed one of their units on my '02 GMC Yukon and have noticed an immediate increase in performance as well as 3-5 miles per gallon increase in MPG.

Re: Any good mods to improve mpg on my 2001 accord?

As for the K&N filter, it is true that they generally tend to breath better than your standard filter. But remember that this is because the filtering will be less when compared to your standard filter.

The first thing to realize is that your probably going to be sucking in a little more fine dust that your standard filter is rejecting. So your ultimate long term engine life might be a bit shorter while the breathing is better.

Something else to think about is that the K&N is reusable. This means that you can keep it cleaner more often with just a little bit of labor. So the cost of buying it can be a wash (ha ha) after long term usage.

I'm not an expert by any means but there is just some food for thought.

My best advise is to break in an engine in the best way described by the manufacturer. After that, it's kind of a matter or running your tires a bit psi high and keeping your foot off it. Emptying the trunk is always a good idea and of course make sure everything is in tune. If your ride is getting on in miles, you should also check your brakes to make sure they aren't sticking at all.

I've never seen any real numbers on the HHO from water systems to actually believe the claims. But I have to ask, what happens when the O2 sensor picks up the effects of the extra O2 in the exhaust? Wouldn't it want to add more fuel to the intake? Hmm.

Re: Any good mods to improve mpg on my 2001 accord?

"I've also been told that just putting a cold-air intake on would help a lot."

Usually people that put cold-air intakes are not interested in mpg improvements and more than half of them have no idea how to measure their mpg. Also how much is "a lot"? 1-2mpg? Also it is different to improve mpg from 18 to 19 mpg but a totally different story from 30 to 31 mpg. So I would take most of these peoples opinions with a bit of salt...

Re: Any good mods to improve mpg on my 2001 accord?

I drive a 2005 Honda Insight and my mileage 30% better than the expected MPG figures solely through conservative driving techniques.  Tire pressure at the max for each tire, speeds under 60 MPH when practical to do so, very limited use of brakes, such as coasting up to stop signs and red lights.  The one aspect I use is to imagine the gas  and brake pedals are made of egg shells so both are used tenderly so as not to crack the shell.  My lifetime fuel average is over 63 MPG with 121K miles.

Using low-rolling-resistance tires and lightweight wheels can really help.
